Beau Joubert

BEAU JOUBERT's rich viticultural history spans back to 1695 when the governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel, allocated the property, Veelverjaagt to Coenraed Visser. One hundred years later, the farm was sold to a French Huguenot descendant, named Dirk Daniel Joubert. He in turn, divided the farm between his two sons; the one retained the Veelverjaagt name while the other named his portion La Provence, to honour the birthplace of his forefathers.

Wine has been made in the cellar on Veelverjaagt since the early 1800's and La Provence's grapes were vinified here. The La Provence farm remained in the possession of the Joubert family while the other changed hands several times over the years. In the late 1960's third generation owners, Stephanus and Brother Dirk Joubert managed to buy the cellar and the majority of the vineyards of Veelverjaagt, thereby reuniting the two farms that had been divided so many years before. This property, Stephanus bequeathed to his two sons, Jannie and Lukas. The farm is graced by a splendid historic manor house, built in the late 18th century, which has been home to all the generations of the Joubert family.

A new era for the farm began in October 2000 when brothers Jannie and Lukas Joubert entered into a joint venture with overseas businessmen. Mr. Andrew Hilliard became the lead partner for this group of businessmen from Wisconsin, USA. Having fallen in love with the splendor of the Cape on his first visit to South Africa, Mr. Hilliard finds himself overseeing the project and now acting as Managing Director.

The new company took the name from the French word Beau, meaning strong, decisive and beautiful, as well as, the family name of the Joubert's, to become known as, BEAU JOUBERT Vineyards and Winery.

The beautiful 116 hectare (290 acres) farm, near the historic town of Stellenbosch, lies nestled on the upper south-facing slopes in the Vlaeberg Valley. It commands a splendid view of the Helderberg and Hottentots Holland Mountains, overlooking False Bay to the south. Altitudes on the farm range from 130 to 300 metres (425 to 1,000 ft) above sea level. Soil types include alluvial clay/loam mixture in the lower-lying parts and decomposed granite in the upper reaches.
